National Championships: Welsh Naomi OWEN swept all the others aside

04/03/2012 – It was the turn of the elder player on day 2 at the Welsh Championships and some great table tennis was witnessed in the National Sports Centre in Cardiff. Naomi OWEN swept all the others aside to claim her 8th title with a final win against youngster Nicole HALL of Tonyrefail.

Nicole ousted Megan PHILLIPS in the semis 3-2 and Naomi beat fellow World Championships team-mate Charlotte CAREY 3-0 in the other half. Clare FLANAGAN Chloe THOMAS Regina GRECH and Beth ROBERTS were the quarter finalists.

The men’s singles was won by 11 times winner Ryan JENKINS who recorded a significant milestone beating Alan GRIFFITHS’ previous tally of 10 wins. Ryan beat Dan O’CONNELL 3-0 in the final and junior master Conor EDWARDS in the semi final 3-0. Dan was taken all the way by Dean CUNDU in the second semi final. Martin GUNN Lewis WILLIAMS Aled HOWELLS and Lee MORGAN made their way to the QF stage where they departed.
In the U21 events Charlotte CAREY and Dan O’CONNELL were champions beating Megan PHILLIPS and Conor EDWARDS respectively. Neil WRIGHT won the Veteran men’s singles when he beat Tony NEEDHAM in their encounter. Regina GRECH beat Allison CUNDY in the women’s competition.

The doubles events were won as follows:

Women’s – Charlotte CAREY and Naomi OWEN Mixed – Daniel O’CONNELL and Megan PHILLIPS Veterans – Steve HALL and Regina GRECH RESULTS
