2020 European Under 21 Championships
The 2020 European Under 21 Championships commences tomorrow in Croatia’s city of Varazdin. In five events 56 men and 56 women will play for titles in the their respective singles doubles and for a first time mixed doubles events. Title holders are Ioannis SGOUROPOULOS of Greece and Adina DIACONU of Romania in Singles and both are on duty in Croatia. However the top seeds are Andreea DRAGOMAN of Romania and Vladimir SIDORENKO of Russia.
In Men’s Singles behind SIDORENKO are Bastien REMBERT of France Rares SIPOS of Romania Jules ROLLAND of France Florian CNUDDE and Laurens DEVOS of Belgium Denis IVONIN of Russsia Cristian PLETEA of Romania Tobias HIPPLER of Germany and Artur ABUSEV of Russia. Title holder SGOUROPOULOS is no 12 seed.
Two Romania’s names are at the leading positions in Women’s Singles Event: DRAGOMAN and reigning champion Adina DIACONU. Mariia TAILAKOVA of Russia Lisa LUNG of Belgium Tatiana KUKULKOVA of Slovakia Anastasia KOLISH of Russia Ana Tofant of Slovenia Ana GARCIA of Spain Prithika PAVADE of France and Slovakia’s Natalia GRIGELOVA are among top 10. Best seeded Croatia’s player is Andrea PAVLOVIC at position no. 14.
All Doubles events will be played in a direct knockout draw. In singles events 8 seeded players will be directly placed in stage 2. In Stage 1 the remaining 48 players will play in a qualification in 12 groups. The winner and the runner- up from each group will qualify for stage 2.
The players ranked 9 – 20 shall be placed in descending ranking order respectively at the top of the groups 1 to 12. The remaining players shall be drawn into the groups 4 by 4 according to the modified snake system. Players from the same Association shall be seeded in different groups.
In Stage 2 the 24 qualifiers from stage 1 and the 8 seeded players shall be drawn into 8 groups. The winner and the runner-up from each group will qualify for stage 3.
The 8 seeded players shall be placed in descending ranking order respectively at the top of the groups 13 to 20. The winners of the groups 1 to 8 in Stage 1 shall be drawn on position 2 in these groups the winners and runners-up of the groups 9 to 12 shall be drawn on position 3 and the runners-up of the groups 1 to 8 on position 4.
In Stage 3 the 16 qualifiers from stage 2 will play a direct knockout competition.
