Main prizes for Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS in Cardiff

Welsh National Championships

 

Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS both added another title to their list of achievements in Cardiff today at the Welsh National Championships.

 

CAREY who has won five previous senior titles beat Anna Hursey 4:1 to claim number 6. With just three more to go to level with Naomi OWEN the Ebbw Vale player will be working towards that goal. Semi-finalists included Danielle KELLY (who had a great win over Chloe THOMAS) and Lara WHITTON.

 

Callum EVANS beat Marc CASTRO in the final in another 4:1 encounter. The scores in each set were closely fought with loads of two point sets separating the pair. Louie EVANS and Josh STACEY made the semi-finals respectively.

 

In the U11 singles the winners were Daniel MEAD and Darcey TAYLOR winning in round robin events. John HOOK won the Over 60 singles defeating Ray GOULDING in the final. Congratulations John on being Welsh Champion 2020. Ruby ELLIOTT won the U13 girls event beating sister Lily ELLIOTT to the top spot. Darcey TAYLOR was 3rd Seren JONES 4th and Lily WALTERS 5th.

 

Toby HARWOOD took the U13 boys beating Elis O’CONNOR in the final. Toby won the U11 in 2018 so is progressing in the right way and will look to add the cadet singles in the coming years.

 

The U21 Men was won by Josh STACEY. In a huge 7th set battle Marc CASTRO just fell short in the end and Josh was able to pull through. In the U21 women Anna HURSEY added yet one more title to the collection beating Danielle KELLY in the final. Danielle had a great weekend and has learnt valuable lessons from Czech and Sweden in recent weeks

 

In the Vets 40 singles Ryan OWEN took the title beating former champion Lee THOMAS. Lee winner on four occasions (2014-2017) couldn’t make it a 5th title this time. Owen CLUTTERBUCK and Dennis BROMAGElost at the semi-final stage. A shot out to Dennis as he was winner in 2 categories and semi-finalist in 2 categories – what a star!

Vets Doubles – John HOOK and Owen CLUTTERBUCK
