Elena ZAHARIA crowned season with another gold

2019 Europe Youth Top-10 in Noordwijk

In the re-run of the final of the European Youth Championships the title in the Cadet Girls Event at the 2019 Europe Youth Top-10 in Noordwijk was decided in the last round. Elena ZAHARIA of Romania overcame Vlada VORONINA of Russia to clinch gold medal. Annett KAUFMANN of Germany won second place and Vlada VORONINA is third.

European champion Elena ZAHARIA won all nine matches in Noordwijk and in that process she lost only five games. Still we had to wait for the outcome of the last match between ZAHARIA and VORONINA to decide the title. However the finish of the tournament failed to deliver great suspense. Romania’s player succeeded in straight games.

“I was very positive and I felt I could beat her. She acted the same as it was at the European Youth Championships. VORONINA was very nervous and angry. I saw my opportunity and seized it. Before the match I studied carefully the final in Ostrava and that experience helped also ” explained ZAHARIA.

With only five games lost ZAHARIA had hardly faced big challenge.

“It helped a little that I had a chance to play against host nation representative Anna PETERS at the beginning. She withdrew later due the injury but that match gave me the chance to warm up and to fell the venue. I think that both players from Germany Annett KAUFMANN and Naomi PRNJAKOVIC play very good; they are very strong.”

What is next?

“I am looking forward World Cadet Challenge in Poland. I hope I will win medal there too. Also I have Super League matches with C.S. Farul Constanta. We are two times champions in the row and I hope for another title with my older sister.”

In the last round the second place was also decided. Annett KAUFMANN beat Helena SOMMEROVA of Czech Republic to clinch silver. Both Annett and Vlada had two defeats.
