Countdown to Para Table Tennis at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
Para table tennis one of the key highlights of the Paralympic program will be hosted at the South Paris Arena beginning on Thursday August 29th and wrapping up on Saturday September 7th. Over the course of 10 days fans can expect continuous action with two sessions daily—morning matches starting at 10:00 am and evening sessions at 5:00 pm. With such a packed schedule Para table tennis is set to be one of the marquee sports of the Games rivaling athletics swimming and sitting volleyball in terms of both scale and excitement. Para table tennis debuted at the inaugural Games in Rome in 1960. Originally the competition was reserved for wheelchair athletes a format that remained until the 1976 Paralympics in Toronto where standing classes were introduced. Today the sport is divided into 11 classes with lower numbers indicating athletes with more significant impairments. In Paris the singles events will feature competition in all 11 classes for men while the women’s singles will see action in 10 classes with classes 1 and 2 combined. Notably the Paris 2024 Games will see the return of doubles events to the Paralympics for the first time since 1976. This includes two men’s doubles and two women’s doubles events for both wheelchair and standing athletes along with one mixed doubles event in each category. However class 11 athletes will not compete in doubles events. Unlike previous Paralympic Games that featured a group stage followed by knockout rounds this year’s competition will have a straight knockout format throughout. The events will kick off with the men’s women’s and mixed doubles while the singles competitions for men and women will start on Sunday September 1st. A total of 181 athletes will compete for medals in Paris.
Girl’s Festival in Sweden – For the Second Time!
The Swedish Girls’ Festival took place for the second consecutive year in the table tennis city of Halmstad from August 9-13. Building on the success of its inaugural event this year’s festival was organized with even higher ambitions. The numbers say it all: 160 female participants 18 trainers (14 of whom were female) 80 tables and three different halls each named after Swedish Olympic team members and role models: Linda BERGSTRÖM Stina KÄLLBERG and Filippa BERGAND. The driving force behind this inspiring event was once again Maria CHRISTOFORAKI the female strategist of the Swedish Table Tennis Association and a former national team table tennis player for Greece. “The festival this year created a wonderful new memory for life! The happiness appreciation and love I received from everyone made all the hard work worthwhile and truly warmed my heart ” said Maria CHRISTOFORAKI. Table Tennis Practice and Social Activities This year’s festival took on a more educational and inspirational tone. Along with many hours of table tennis training participants had the opportunity to attend various lectures workshops and social activities. A highlight of the event was the chance for everyone to meet take photos with and interview Jörgen Persson and Stina Källberg fresh from their successful performance at the Olympic Games in Paris. Additionally participants were hosted by Siri Benjegård the 13-year-old rising star who shone at the European Youth Championships and the European U13-Championships. “The purpose of this festival goes beyond table tennis development. We aim to encourage attendees to connect network and inspire each other while also having fun and creating lasting friendships outside the sport ” added Maria CHRISTOFORAKI. A Festival for EVERYONE What makes the festival truly special is its inclusivity—every female regardless of age or skill level is welcome to participate. The youngest participant 9-year-old Märta said she “improved her table tennis a lot made new friends but the best moment for her was meeting and playing with her idol Stina.” Meanwhile the oldest participant 78-year-old Angela who also took part in last year’s event noted that “table tennis helps my physical condition and I started playing to improve my health. The most exciting part was learning new things meeting new people and improving thanks to the tips from both trainers and younger participants.” Another standout moment was the participation of a family spanning three generations—grandmother daughter and granddaughter—who were thrilled to find a shared activity that they could all enjoy together as a family. “A big thank you to all the participants trainers colleagues and sponsors who embraced and believed in this idea! I look forward to next year when we will create an even better festival ” concluded Maria CHRISTOFORAKI.

Zoltán BÁTORFI joins DTTB as New Assistant National Women’s Coach
The coaching team of the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB) is getting a boost. Starting on October 1 49-year-old Hungarian Zoltán BÁTORFI will join as an assistant national coach supporting national women’s coach Tamara BOROS. “We are excited that Zoltán will officially be part of our team starting in October. As a long-time coach of the Hungarian women’s national team and a former player he brings a tremendous amount of experience. We have known Zoltán for many years both as a coach and as a former player. He fits well with us both professionally and personally ” said DTTB sports director Richard PRAUSE about the Hungarian’s appointment. BÁTORFI is also looking forward to his new role at the German Table Tennis Federation: “I am a very motivated coach who enjoys working closely with athletes in the training hall. Germany has been the benchmark in European table tennis for many years. It is an incredibly appealing challenge to be able to contribute to the leading nation in the women’s sector. I look forward to supporting the more experienced players in their development and helping the younger ones take a successful path into adult competition.” Like his sister Csilla who won nine gold medals at European Championships and four bronze medals at World Championships his father István also a coach had a significant influence on his sporting career. Zoltán represented his country for six years in the Olympic Games World Championships and European Championships. At the 1996 European Championships in Bratislava BÁTORFI even competed in mixed doubles alongside his future superior the then Croatian world-class player and current national women’s coach Tamara BOROS. “It was a short appearance though as we lost in the first round ” BÁTORFI recalls with a smile adding “I’m very confident that Tamy and I will harmonize much better as a coaching duo than in mixed doubles.” The duo has already tested their collaboration during a short period in preparation for the Olympic Games. After finishing his national team career the nine-time Hungarian champion in mixed doubles and team events moved to Spain. In Spain BÁTORFI obtained the highest-level coaching license and began his first coaching position at the traditional club Leka Enea Irun. In 2014 he returned to Hungary as the national coach. Parallel to this he successfully completed his master’s degree in coaching at the University of Pécs Hungary’s oldest university. From 2014 Bátorfi coached Hungary’s boys’ national team for three years working with today’s national players Ádám SZUDI and Bence MAJOROS before being responsible for the women’s national team from 2017 to the end of 2023. The team’s biggest successes during these six years were reaching the semifinals at the European Championships and European Games as well as qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics.
BOLL OVTCHAROV & Co: Biggest stars gather once again in Bundesliga
Olympic medalists former world champions and more—the elite of European table tennis will once again take part in the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) for the 2024/25 season. With the season just around the corner let’s take a look at some of the biggest names in the circuit. Timo BOLL This season will be a special one not only for Timo BOLL but for the entire TTBL. After ending his international career the table tennis superstar is now embarking on a farewell tour in the TTBL after nearly 30 years of relentless dedication. In his final season BOLL aims to compete once more with Borussia Düsseldorf. After winning both the championship and the cup last season the record champion’s goal is to win titles in all three competitions again. “I’m really looking forward to the next season—to once again travel to all the halls to say goodbye everywhere ” Boll said at the Liebherr TTBL Final. The countdown has begun for all fans to see the 43-year-old live in action one last time. Hugo CALDERANO TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen had a disappointing season: With the return of Hugo CALDERANO the Swabians aimed at least for the playoffs but ended up in sixth place at the end of the regular season. The Brazilian had a 9:3 individual record. In the new season the goal is to return to the top four and the TTF’s top players recently gained momentum at the Olympics. CALDERANO narrowly missed out on a medal in the individual competition finishing fourth after a loss to Felix LEBRUN while Simon GAUZY won bronze with the French team in the team competition. Benedikt DUDA It’s hard to imagine TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt without Benedikt DUDA. The 30-year-old has been playing for the club from Oberbergischer Kreis since his youth and has been in the TTBL since 2014. During this time DUDA has developed into one of the best players in Germany: He has won the German singles championship twice (2021 2024) celebrated the Team European Championship with the national team in 2021 and was the runner-up in the Team World Championship in 2022. He remains the key player for Bergneustadt. Despite personnel issues TTC achieved a respectable seventh place last season and they aim for similar success in the new season. Mattias FALCK Mattias FALCK has been playing for SV Werder Bremen for five years and has since become the undisputed top player for the North Germans. FALCK led Bremen to the playoffs twice (2019 2024) but they lost last spring to 1. FC Saarbrücken TT. Internationally the Swede has also achieved notable success. FALCK won World Championship silver in singles (2019) became a world champion in doubles (2021) and European champion in doubles (2022) and team (2023). In the new season Werder is once again among the contenders for playoff spots with FALCK joined by Kirill GERASSIMENKO Marcelo AGUIRRE and newcomer Andrei PUTUNTICA. Patrick FRANZISKA Patrick FRANZISKA has reached the Liebherr TTBL final for the German championship six times in a row with 1. FC Saarbrücken TT and in the new season the reigning vice-champion aims for titles again. FRANZISKA has been with FCS since 2016 and together they have won trophies in the TTBL (2020) the German Table Tennis Cup (2022) and the Champions League twice (2023 2024). Internationally the world number 11 recently caused a sensation by reaching the final of the Grand Smash in Jeddah with a win against FAN Zhendong. In the new season FRANZISKA will continue to compete for Saarbrücken alongside Darko JORGIC and other top players with the two-time Olympic silver medalist (singles team) Truls MÖREGARDH also participating in the Champions League. Kristian KARLSSON Kristian KARLSSON is back! In 2022 the Swede left Borussia Düsseldorf and the TTBL after six years. In 2024/25 KARLSSON is returning to Germany surprisingly joining promoted club TTC OE Bad Homburg. “I like ambitious clubs with vision and the associated challenge ” said the 2021 world doubles champion when announcing his move in February. KARLSSON aims to help the Hessians stay in the TTBL. His recent success at the Olympics should provide momentum for this mission: KARLSSON and Sweden reached the final and he along with fellow Bad Homburg recruit Anton KÄLLBERG (Borussia Düsseldorf) and MÖREGARDH celebrated their silver medals. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV The signing of Dimitrij OVTCHAROV by TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell was one of the biggest sensations of the recent transfer window. After finishing 11th and 10th in the past two seasons the East Hessians aim to climb the table again—ideally even reaching the playoffs. They also brought in KAO Cheng-Jui and CHUANG Chih-Yuan remains on the team. But OVTCHAROV will undoubtedly be the main attraction at TTC: Although the 35-year-old recently missed out on a medal in Paris with two bronze medals in singles (2012 2021) and two silver (2008 2021) and bronze (2012 2016) in team events he is already the most successful German table tennis Olympian of all time. Jin UEDA TSV Bad Königshofen had high hopes for the signing of Jin UEDA and these were immediately fulfilled. Although the Japanese player could only be used in the second half of the season due to a transfer error his 7:6 record in the second half was crucial in securing the club’s first-ever playoff berth. In addition to his sporting achievements UEDA has won over the hearts of the Königshofen fans. With the duo of Ueda and Bastian STEGER TSV is again a strong contender for a top-four spot in the 2024/25 season.
