Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS took the Women and Men Singles

Welsh National Championships

 

Charlotte CAREY and Callum EVANS took the Women and Men Singles at the 2017 Welsh National Championships. Charlotte beat local rival Chloe THOMAS in the final 4/1 after beating Beth ROBERTS in the semis. Chloe beat youngster Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw dropping one set on the way. It’s Charlotte 3rd title in total.

 

Callum reversed the 2015 final where he lost to Daniel O’CONNELL in a tight final. This time it was the Grantham College based players turn to claim Gold winning 4/1. Callum beat Dean Cundy In the semis with Dan beating Ryan OYLER in the other semi.

 

The U13 Girls singles was won by Bethan JONES. Bethan beat Ruby ELLIOTT Mali DIGGLE and Sasha LEWIS on route to the title. The U11 boys singles was won by Evan WILLIAMS who beat fellow Ael y BRYN clubmate Morgan CUSACK in a great final. The U11 girls went the way of Ruby ELLIOTT who managed to hold off Lowri HURD Lili-Mai MAITLAND Mali DIGGLE and Sasha Lewis to bring the title home.

Louie Evans has joined his brother in winning a Welsh title. The younger Evans beat Evan O’CONNOR in the final of the U13 boys.

 

Lee Thomas retained the Vets title with a 3/1 final win against Neil WRIGHT. The top 2 seeds beat Mark FARROW and Steve HALL respectively in the semis.

Steve Hall and Neil WRIGHT combined to sort out Steve EADES and Mark SIMON in the Vets doubles final.

 

Grantham based duo Callum EVANS and Joshua STACEY took the men’s doubles championship beating Dean CUNDY and Lloyd GREGORY in the final 3/0.

 

In the U21 women’s event Jamie-Lee HARLEY beat Beth ROBERTS in the semis 4/3 to set up a final with number 1 seed Charlotte CAREY. Charlotte made it through by beating Anna HURSEY in the other half of the draw. The final was a little one sided for the World ranked star who won 4/0 and the title.

 

Like Charlotte CALLUM added the U21 to the senior title with a great 4/1 win vs Marc CASTRO. Castro beat Ryan OYLER in the game of the day 12/10 in the 7th.

 

Swansea star Dennis BROMAGE took the field on in the Over 50’s earlier today and will take a nice trophy back down the M4. Dennis beat Roger GRECH 3/0 in the final.

 

On day 1 Anna HURSEY was a double winner today at the Welsh National Championships as she won both the Cadet and Junior Singles in style. The 10 year old Cardiff City member beat Lydia John in the Junior final and Lara Whitton in the Cadets.

 

Joseph ROBERTS won the Cadet Boys singles for the first time to add to the U13 singles he collected last year. Joseph beat North Wales youngster Ben MOORE in the final. It was great to see ben in the final as he was not seeded at the start of the day. Ben beat fellow North Wales team mate Owen HOPWOOD in the semis as Joseph beat Jack O’DUFFY.

 

The Over 50’s final saw an old battle resurface as Steve EADES locked horns with Steve HALL. Hall was too stron for his rival in the end taking the title.

 

Roger THOMAS won the Over 70’s singles in a round robin beating Dennis BROMAGE and 3 others to top spot.

 

In the Junior Boys final it was Marc CASTRO and Joshua STACEY who made it through to fight it out. Josh ran away with it 3/0 in the end to claim the cup and the title. Josh beat Jack O’DUFFY (who had a good day) and Marc beat Cadet winner Joseph ROBERTS.

 

The Junior Doubles was the final event to be won and the final match was between Josh STACEY and partner Joseph ROBERTS against Pouyan JAVANMARD and Cade SHORT. Stacey and Roberts won it 3/1 to complete the day.
